Those who live on this historic peninsula and personally help maintain it as a destination for thousands to visit and enjoy are experiencing negative impacts on their daily lives as a result of decisions that chip away at and destroy the very things we, our guests, and visitors treasure.
When The CSC was founded, our initial concern was the volume of commercial tourism -- walking groups with up to 60 people clogged our streets, tour buses were increasing, and the hours of such commerce in our neighborhoods went unbridled. This threatened the scale, authenticity, and family life of our neighborhoods.
Careful planning can ensure that the unique character and charm of our historic city will be maintained through the structures it builds, the ordinances it passes, and the respect for its residents.
Charleston has over 4000 buildings registered in its national historic district, a unique collection of international stature, remarkable for a city our size. If not guarded closely, these irreplaceable structures and the charm of our city will be lost forever. A look at the past decade shows that much has and will continue to be lost if the pace and manner of change continues unabated.
We need sound decision-making and consistent, thoughtful standards to be applied as the pressures for change continue. Your help is needed to preserve the charm, look, and feel of our special city.
