The Three Sisters Award is named in honor of three modest row houses, c. 1840, at East Bay and Calhoun Streets, which were demolished in 1962 to avoid real estate property taxes and make way for a street level parking lot that was never completed. Collectively, Charleston's historic houses are crucial to the city's unique sense of place. Their loss, like "The Three Sisters," underscores how easily our ambience can be lost. The current property tax crisis emphasizes how destructive the unintended consequences of such policies can be.
The CSC Three Sisters Award honors individuals who are also city treasures. Like the "Three Sisters", they make exemplary contributions to the special character and quality of life in Charleston and are often not appreciated until they are gone.
